Shrimp Safety Tips
It is important to get head-on shrimp as fresh as you can because shrimp with their heads on spoil easily. With the heads still on, as soon as the shrimp dies, the acids and juices from the head start to seep into the rest of the body/meat to start decomposition almost immediately. Please follow these guidelines to insure freshness.
- Head-on shrimp can be kept in the fridge with some ice for maximum of 2 days (48 hours) to maintain freshness. This is the best time period to enjoy the shrimp.
- If you must keep it for longer, taking the heads off would give you 2 more days, for 4 days total, to use the shrimp with peak freshness. Do keep in mind that head-on shrimp has a good amount more flavor potential than head-off shrimp.
- Cooked shrimp last a maximum of 4 days in the refrigerator so it's another option.
- If you must freeze it, make sure to remove the heads. We recommend using it within 4 months. Defrost over-night in the fridge before use.
